Labour calls for two top class schools for Smiths Wood

Labour campaigners have attacked Solihull Council’s plans for the future of education in Smiths Wood and called for the community to have two top class primary schools.
Ed Williams and Labour Councillor Graham Craig are calling for Kingfisher Primary School to remain open and not be merged with Bosworth Wood Primary School.
Local campaigner welcomes Government crack down on rogue employers

Local Labour campaigner Ed Williams has welcomed a Government drive against rogue employers who refuse to pay their workers the minimum wage.
The Government campaign will be aided by measures included in the Employment Bill which is being discussed in parliament this week. If the bill is successful tough new penalties for rogue employers will be introduced including an automatic £5000 fine for those underpaying their workers. The most serious cases will be tried in a Crown Court, which will have the power to impose limited penalties.
Local campaigner welcomes minimum wage rise

Local Labour parliamentary campaigner for Meriden Ed Williams has welcomed the recent rise in the minimum wage by the Labour Government. The rate has risen to £5.73 per hour for workers aged 22 and over, £4.77 for 18-21 year olds and £3.53 for those aged 16 and 17 from the 1st October.

Spelman faces fresh allegations

Ed Williams, the prospective Labour Party candidate for Meriden, has today written to the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards to urge him to interview Sally Hammond, the former Parliamentary Secretary to Caroline Spelman, amidst fresh allegations from the BBC’s Newsnight.
NHS: absolutely ‘Brill’ for Arthur!

Ed Williams Labour PPC for Meriden, has today joined Arthur Brill in wishing the NHS a very happy 60th birthday. Arthur Brill, 72, has a very special relationship with one of the country’s best loved institutions having been in and out of care for much of the past 30years. For Mr Brill has suffered, and survived, five separate heart attacks and he today has joined hundreds of other grateful Britons in using this momentous landmark to thank a very special member of NHS staff.
Labour’s PPC for Meriden says Caroline Spelman must “set the record the straight”.

Ed Williams, Labour’s Parliamentary Candidate for Meriden has issued a set of questions in advance of Meriden MP Caroline Spelman’s meeting with the Parliamentary Commissioner Sir John Lyons today (09 June 2008).
The meeting comes after several days of speculation about whether Caroline Spelman used parliamentary expenses to pay for childcare. Ms Spelman claims that Tina Haynes (the nanny who looked after her children) was paid to act as her constituency secretary.
Knowle fun run raises £37,000

After completing the run Ed said:
"There was a great atmosphere at the run and I managed to get round in one piece. I wasn't even too stiff on Monday!
"According to the organisers the event has raised about £37,000 which is great news for the nominated charities!"
Labour's Ed Williams to join Knowle fun run

Labour's parliamentary candidate for Meriden will join nearly 2,000 other runners this Sunday (11 May) to take part in the Knowle fun run.
In its 25th year, the fun run has been an annual fixture since 1984 when 500 runners first undertook the five mile course. The fun run was initially organised by local resident Isobel Robertson, but is now run by the Knowle and Dorridge Lions.

Free national bus travel for pensioners and disabled welcomed

New national concessionary passes that will give the over 60 and eligible disabled people free off peak travel on all local buses in England from 1 April have been welcomed by Labour's local parliamentary candidates Ed Williams and Sarah Merrill.
More over 60s in the West Midlands county than in any other travel region have applied for the pass - some 400,000 in total.
